The project aims at developing an optimal design method for mechanical “fuses,” load-bearing structures that will fracture under prescribed loading conditions, based on structural topology optimization. We plan to apply the developed method for the optimal design of mechanical fuses for the prosthetic legs, battery electric vehicles, and other safety-critical applications.
