Wireless Power for Efficient Moving Vehicle-to-Vehicle Energy Transfer (MV2V-WPT)

Despite the environmental and societal benefits of an electrified transportation system, three major concerns have hindered widespread adoption of EVs: (1) the high cost of batteries; (2) a lack of sufficient charging infrastructure; and (3) the limited driving range of EVs. Our innovation tackles all three challenges by introducing MV2V-WPT between EVs. In MV2V-WPT, power is channeled wirelessly through a low-cost structured coating on the road surface. Several modalities are possible, including: (1) MV2V-WPT within an Uber-like sharing paradigm (peer-to-peer power transfer [P3T]) where EVs and other specialized charging vehicles (designated utility vehicle [DUV]) form a mobile network of crowd-sourced power storage/supply; (2) a fleet of larger DUVs operating along charging corridors along highways.
