Predictive evaluation of radiation damage of photonic devices

The performance of optoelectronic and photonic devices in space is often limited by exposure to the hazardous radiation environment. We will combine quantitative quantum theory predictions with meticulous experiments to efficiently discover excitonic probes that can precisely evaluate radiation effects on photonic components. Such probes are highly sensitive to the surrounding environment and can aid in material evaluation prior to reaching damage thresholds. We will utilize the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory and Lurie Nanofabrication Facility for the proposed work. The findings will enable non-destructive evaluation of the actual devices and support our hypothesis of ability to predict component failure under radiation exposure.
