Post-award Information

Funding Process

Research administrators named by token-contributing faculty members during the application process received a follow up email, asking them to submit a shortcode for their token-contributing faculty member’s $5K contribution.

Once shortcodes are received from all token-contributing faculty members, the project team will receive an email with the P/G and general fund shortcode for the project’s expenses.

The START grant award period for the FY23 cycle is May 31, 2023 – May 31, 2024.

Managing Award Financials

Once your project is funded, you’ll receive a new P/G and general fund shortcode. All project expenses must be charged to this shortcode. Investigators may not request additional shortcodes. Expenses cannot be transferred to this shortcode, and funds cannot be withdrawn from this shortcode.

Allowable Expenses

At least half of the award must be used to train undergraduate students, graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows by paying trainee salaries, tuition, and/or lab fees. Supply and equipment purchases are allowable. Student travel is permitted (conference attendance or presentation of results) and will fall within the 50% research-related discretionary expenses.

Unallowable Expenses

No funding may cover the salaries of tenured or tenure-track assistant/associate/full professors and associate/full research professors, faculty travel, or alcohol. Investigators will be responsible for covering unallowable expenses charged to the START project.

Project Closing
  • If there is a positive account balance over $2K, those funds will be returned proportionately to the accounts from which contributions came.
  • If there is a positive account balance under $2K, the funds will be swept back to Michigan Engineering.
  • If there is a negative account balance, the total balance will be divided between the shortcodes supplied by each token-contributing investigator.
