CoE START Grant Application
Welcome to the CoE Seeding to Accelerate Research Themes (START) grant application.
START is a new program in Engineering that provides a mechanism for faculty members to obtain preliminary results for new and innovative research that is not yet ready for external proposal submission.
Before starting this application, review the application checklist. Questions? Check out the FAQ.
Please note that the project details entered here will be visible on the START website at start.engin.umich.edu/themes. The U-M Office of Innovation Partnerships will review your project before it is posted to the website. Innovation Partnerships may reach out to suggest changes to the language in your project title or description if they determine that your intellectual property may be at risk.
Note that if you currently have a START grant (awarded Winter-Spring 2022) you are not eligible to contribute a token to another START grant until the next cycle of START. Check your eligibility to contribute a token here.
You can contact the START team at: https://myumi.ch/pZRE2
This application will stop accepting submissions on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. (noon).
Project Title
visible on the START site
Improving solar panel recycling processes
Project Description
1 paragraph abstract of your work (visible on START site)
Solar energy is inexpensive and environmentally friendly, but after about 30 years, many crystalline silicon solar panels start seeing significant dips in energy production. More panels will reach the end of their life each year (experts think we’ll have 80 million tons of solar panel waste by 2050), and even now, old solar panels are a problem as the majority of them end up in landfills where they can release toxins harmful to both the environment and human health.
Project Goal
1 sentence describing the intended outcome of your project (visible on START site)
Determine if there are efficiencies that can be made in current solar panel recycling processes or if there is more research to be done to find more efficient strategies altogether.

Review the START grant policy acknowledgements below and select “I agree” if you agree.
Note: You cannot submit an application without agreeing to the acknowledgement statements. All Investigators will be required to review and agree to these acknowledgement statements before the application is submitted.
I acknowledge that I am committing my only START funding token this cycle to this project, and I cannot contribute my funding token to another START project in this cycle.

I agree
I acknowledge that I am responsible for contributing 1/3 of my requested funding amount, because 2/3 of my token is funded by the College of Engineering, and 1/3 is funded via faculty cost share.

I agree
I acknowledge that if my project is funded, I am responsible for providing the agreed upon cost-sharing funds within one week of receiving an award notification.

I agree
I acknowledge that I must submit an external proposal based on this START team’s work within 6 months of the project’s one-year end date.

I agree
I acknowledge that at least half of the START award must be used to train undergraduate students, graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows by paying trainee salaries, tuition, and/or lab fees. Supply and equipment purchases are allowable. Funds cannot be used for faculty salaries or travel.

I agree
I acknowledge that START grant funds may only be used for new research that is not currently supported by an external proposal.
